Действие этой миссии разворачивается в огромных двемерских руинах под названием Альфтанд, являющихся преддверием для огромной подземной пещеры Черный Предел. В этой пещере есть много дополнительных квестов, а значит прохождение может стать весьма длительным.
Двемерская обсерватория имеет небольшую головоломку, которую надо разгадать для получения Древнего Свитка, хранящегося внутри. Выход на поверхность не будет затруднительным, а маркер места всегда позволит вернуться в Черный Предел вновь.

Searching for the Elder Scrolls
After starting this quest, ask either Арнгейр or Эсберн about where one might locate an Elder Scroll. Both will point you in the same direction: the Коллегия Винтерхолда. If you have not yet joined the college, Фаральда will have you cast a spell of her choice. If you don't have it, she will sell it to you for a discounted price. Also you may get a dialogue option that will say "would you let a dragonborn in", in which case she will ask you to show her a shout, and she will let you in this way as well.
Once inside the college, talk to the librarian, Ураг гро-Шуб, who will provide two books on the Elder Scrolls, Воздействие Древних свитков and Размышления о Древних свитках. Upon reading the second book, Urag will tell you about its author, a man who knows much of the Elder Scrolls who left the college some years ago. Travel north to find Септимий Сегоний, at his outpost. He will tell you to visit a Dwemer ruin to find the scroll, and gives you two items, which will act as keys in the rest of the quest.
Note: This also starts the quest За гранью обыденного, the Daedric quest for Hermaeus Mora.
Alftand
This mission features a very large Dwemer ruin by the name of Альфтанд which acts as a gateway to Черный Предел, a tremendous underground cavern. There are many auxiliary objectives to be found in Blackreach, meaning that this quest can be quite a lengthy one. Both Alftand and Blackreach contain Паровой центурион and Фалмер, both of which are capable of making this quest near-impossible if preparations are not made.
The easiest way to attack this lengthy quest is to prepare yourself for multiple difficult battles. First, you must make your way through Альфтанд. It is a large dungeon with a lot of fighting, but it is very self explanatory on where to go. Eventually, you will reach a door, which you will walk out of, and encounter (2-4) Falmer. Kill the Falmer, and on each side of you will be two staircases. Walk up the staircase and there will be a lever which controls the gate below.
After the gate you will find a Двемерский центурион, which can prove to be a challenge to low/mid level characters. One easy way to kill it is to trap him behind the gate, then attack from a distance in safety.
Continuing up more stairs, you will find Сулла Требатий and Умана, hiding from the Centurion. They are both hostile, but if left uninterrupted, they will begin bickering with each other and eventually break out into a fight. The player can finish off the survivor, or take the opportunity to depart quietly. Use the sphere given by Septimus Signus on a mysterious table to reveal a staircase. Blackreach is below. If you grabbed the key off the Centurion, you can also take a detour through the lift back to the surface in order to sell off the enormous loot you probably accumulated and then return to the lift to continue on down to Blackreach.
Blackreach
Finally, you will be in Черный Предел, a vast underground cavern that will take a lot of time to traverse. Dwemer robotics and Falmer continue to be common enemies. Follow the cobblestone path to your ultimate destination, the Башня Мзарк. Low level players wanting to avoid encounters should give any buildings a wide berth and try to follow the river instead.
Inside the Башня Мзарк, climb to the very top of the tower to a podium with several buttons. The lexicon receptacle is to the right and must be activated first. Then the buttons must be pressed until the lexicon is transcribed and the Elder Scroll descends. The order the buttons must be activated seems to be inconsistent. One method is as follows: press the third button (1, 2, 3, 4 from left to right) until the second button lights up. Then continue to press the second button until the first lights up. Press the first, and the Elder Scroll will be revealed. Pick up the transcribed Lexicon and the Scroll.
With the Elder Scroll in hand, return to Партурнакс at the Глотка Мира to begin the next quest.

- Attempting to read the Elder Scroll will inflict temporary blindness upon the player.
- Having the Clairvoyance spell really helps with navigating Blackreach.
- You don´t have to go to Blackreach through Alftand, it´s also possible to reach it through the two other linked dwemer ruins, Ральдбтхар and Мзинчалефт, by using the sphere given by Septimus on the apparatus at the end of these dungeons.
- You do not actually need to start this quest to get the Elder Scroll - you can find Septimus' refuge on your own. It's a bit out of the way, far off the coast, so it's unlikely you'll find it unless you like swimming around the ice floes.
- A very safe and fast way to the tower is to stick to the right wall when you enter Blackreach from Alftand. You will only have to fight a couple of Falmers, and you will be there in 5 minutes.
Bugs
- This quest occasionally conflicts with the Коллегия Винтерхолда quest line. Ураг гро-Шуб will sometimes lack the dialogue options required to continue Elder Knowledge. Finishing the College of Winterhold quests should resolve the issue. Alternatively, PC users can use the console to progress Elder Knowledge by setting its stage to 80 by typing
setstage MQ205 80. It is also possible to head straight to Blackreach and get the scroll regardless, but you will not have any quest markers to rely on.
- If you approach Сулла Требатий and Умана under cover, but make enough noise to cause them to start searching for you, they will immediately forget about you and begin fighting each other instead.
- If Urag gro-Shub will not talk to you, there is also a book on the desk that he usually stands behind. Read it and then talk to Urag and continue with your quest.
- Completing the Quest for Hermaeus Mora will conflict with this quest if you haven't gotten to the point where you need to speak with Септимий Сегоний, due to the fact that he dies in the Hermaeus Mora quest. He is no longer there for you to be sent to.
